AURORA WORKSHOP
ITINERARY
Day 1
We collect you from your hotel in Narvik from 2pm and drive north to Grovfjord. You'll need a little time to settle into the Aurora Huts by the shore, before we sit down for afternoon tea and a chat about photography. Ewen likes to go through your camera setup and techniques for shooting auroras, to make sure you'll be ready for action when the auroras arrive.
The first night we hope to shoot auroras close to the cabins, with views out across the water. We also have options to head into the forest and capture auroras above the pine trees, or drive a little further to a frozen lake to shoot up and down the valley. We have several favourite locations that are easy to access from the road, but very quiet. You don't need to walk far through the snow to find a good shot.
Day 2
You may need a sleep in after being out late at night, and we'll have breakfast ready for you whenever suits you. We like to plan a small outing for the late morning as well, so you can get familiar with Grovfjord and it's wildnerness. We give you the option of a boat ride into the fjord, a snowshoe walk into the forest, or an ATV ride up the mountain for lunch by the camp fire. After lunch we'll have time to go through your photos from the first night and have a session on editing/processing the images.
Our schedule is flexible and we tailor the day to suit your preference. We want to leave plenty of spare time in the day for you to catch up on sleep, edit some of your photos, or just enjoy the quiet location of the Aurora Huts.
Dinner is included of course, and then we wait again through the night for signs of aurora activity. We cannot be certain to see auroras, even after two nights, but we certainly can be ready if they show for us.
Day 3
There's no need to checkout early from Elvegård. If you've been awake through the small hours you may want to sleep in a little bit. We make sure you have breakfast at the camp before starting the drive back to Narvik for your onward journey sometime around midday. We suggest you don't make plans to be on an early morning flight out of Evenes/Lofoten Airport just in case :)
ARCTIC
WEATHER
Winter in the Arctic is highly unpredictable and that can impact your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. There are no guarantees that you will see aurora on a workshop. We need the right conditions from solar winds and we need clear skies above Narvik. This workshop is not an Aurora Chase, and we don't drive for 4 hours into the darkness looking for a patch of clear sky. If the weather is cloudy or snowing then we spend our time learning some photography instead of chasing auroras.
You need a little bit of luck with the weather, but we also plan for two nights in Grov to give us a better chance. Even if we do get clear skies there is no certainty that the aurora will dance for us. They come when they come. But we will be ready for the action when it happens, and we'll be well prepared.
Sometimes they show up before dinner time, and other nights they wait until after desert is finished. Often they wait until midnight, or even much later. We will stay on alert until 3am on watch if we need to, and wake you when there's something to see. There have been nights when they don't visit at all, and all we see are the stars and the moon.
The World's Best Photo Tours
You won't find a better tour experience: Unmatched knowledge of the locations and local support, hand crafted experiences that run only once every one or two years, our experience teaching the art of photography and a commitment to smaller group sizes.
Beginners Welcome
These tours are not just for advanced photographers, we love welcoming beginners to the craft to help them fast track their creative abilities. Sharing what we know and giving other photographers a truly wonderful experience is the best part of running these tours. If you're ready to learn new skills while you travel then this is the trip for you. If you want to spend quality time with like minded people and enjoy the sharing of knowledge and experiences, then we would love to have you along.
8 is Great
If you have to share a tour with dozens of other photographers, then it's just a tour instead of a photo tour. Smaller groups mean less drama, more fun and are infinitely more rewarding. My first responsibility is to ensure every person on my tour gets plenty of my time and advice, and with fewer photographers in one place you will come home with better photos and the best light :)
Small isn't just good, it's great!
