DxO PhotoLab Discount Code
I posted a video about getting away from subscription pricing with Adobe and Capture One, so the folks at DxO reached out to offer a discount code to my readers :)

OK, now here's the story!

I don't like subscription pricing. One of the reasons I was a fan of Capture One for so long was they had stayed away from subscriptions, and backed their licenses with major upgrades and software patches. Those days are over, and while you can still buy a "perpetual license" from Capture One, if there's a bug in the software or you want to open files from a new camera you will have to buy a new license.

DxO are doing things a little bit different, which is why I named them in my YouTube as an alternative to Lightroom and Capture One. I bought a license for DxO PhotoLab some years ago, because at the time Capture One were not playing nice with new Lumix cameras. Which also highlights one of the vagrancies of their subscription model, which can see you paying every month even if they won't open files from your new camera.

DxO is different to LR and C1, in that they have skipped the "Library" or "Catalogue". There is no database of your files, just a great editing tool that does all the usual things with minimum fuss. It's much lighter to run than Lightroom as well.

I don't want to get dragged into debates over which toll has better de-noise algorithms or the most AI features. I don't really care. All of them do what I need and the noise clean up is good regardless. I have no interest in AI tools, especially from a company that has been training their Gen AI on my photos without my permission. No thanks.

What I do care about is opening my very old version of PhotoLab with a brand new camera that didn't exist four years ago, and getting full support for that camera. PhotoLab is big on profiles for lenses too. That is their thing. They think they know better than the lens manufacturers. They are a little geeky and obsessive, and ended up making a really good RAW file editor.

It's not as smooth as Capture One. It's a little clunky in some ways. But it works, and it works in far more situations that Capture One has over the years. They don't play politics over which cameras they enable, or not. It just works. So I was happy when DxO reached out to me to chat about their software, and offer a special deal for my readers.

If you haven't seen my video about why Adobe and Capture One make me angry, then have a look:

Good Gear

Very selected features on the hardware, software and extra wares that help me get the job done.

Sony A7 IV Custom Setup

My guide to custom settings on the Sony A7IV, including a free download of my own CamSet to configure your Sony.

TT Artisan 35mm F1.8

Food photography lens for smaller mirrorless cameras. Excellent quality images and a fast aperture make this lens the ideal companion to your APS-C sized sensor such as the Nikon Z50 and Canon R50.

ZV-E1 Still My Favourite Sony

Two years on and this affordable and compact full-frame camera still delivers great results, and still makes us smile. Definitely one of those times when less is more.

Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD

I travelled in the Himalayas for a few months with this lovely lens. If you're interested in more than just tech specs, and what it's like to work with this lens for an extended time then you've come to the right place.

Lumix 100-500mm Telephoto for L-Mount

Superb quality AF and Stabilisation from a modest sized design. This lens brings something very special to the L-mount lineup, and pairs wonderfully with cameras like the Leica SL3 or Lumix S1RII.

Rotating Collar from NISI

NISI have executed an excellent design with well considered detail and smooth operation. We've found this kit to be useful in the kitchen shooting video, and in the Arctic shooting auroras. Excellent bang for buck.
