Shellie's Cookbook
It's been hard keeping this one a secret all year. We didn't even tell Shellie's mum! But at last we get to share a little of the joy from Shellie's Winter Cabin Cookbook.

I wanted to say a few words about how The Arctic has been a central character in our lives ever since we started dating, or how the people we've met on this journey are literally some of my favourite people ever, or try to explain a little of why the winter months of polar night in Norway remain my favourite time of year.

But I would bore you senseless with details, and there still wouldn't be enough words to say it all.

There are a tonne of reasons for me to be proud of my wife. The international release of The Winter Cabin Cookbook is just one more.

The cookbook thing is a big deal for Shellie. I have always known how wonderful she is, but I feel it's about time the rest of the world caught up. Shellie is not a shouty person who reaches for the line light. She is a little shy and often anxious. She is also deeply talented, and for a decade now Shellie has made my life wonderful. The cookbook is just one more milestone along that journey.

We shared the journey of this cookbook together, staying in cabins across Norway, Sweden and Iceland. We had help from friends, and friends of friends. It took years to compile all the recipes and images. And before that Shellie spent years perfecting the art of cooking in strange cabins with a random assortment of utensils and pots.

She has been creative, resourceful, tenacious and delicious. She's just really really good at working with recipes, and finding ways to adapt them to local ingredients. I want the whole world to see how lovely her cooking is, and what a unique culinary experience is on offer in the far north. When the two meet, I have found my favourite place in the world.

Cookbooks take a long time to produce, and yet often only stay on the shelves for a matter of months. That's just how it is. Some celebrities might sell a title for a year or more, if they're lucky. Shellie isn't famous though. She's not an influencer, and she's not a TV star. She's Shellie. She's real and wonderful and she's made a lovely cookbook filled with moments that she worked hard to make happen.

And a fella couldn't be more proud of his wife, or more grateful for the chance to be a part of her journey.

25 Years Later

I started my photographic career 25 years ago. My plan wasn’t so much “to become a freelancer”, it was simply to avoid getting a real job. Every year I didn’t have to go back to the office was a win.

Creatively Valued

Most of the time our clients are wonderful people to work with, because we're helping each other to get where we need to be. But sometimes you end up with a client who actually doesn't value your work at all, and that's a problem in more ways than you might imagine.

Do You Care About AI

The fundamental differences between machine learning and human artistic expression is not something you can teach. It's something you have to experience. That's always going to be the bridge that AI cannot cross.

Photography is My Family

It’s not that I don’t have time for friends and family, it's just that photography IS my family.

Life Without The Algorithm

There's more to photography than being popular. Being genuine counts for something too. In the new frontier of the Fediverse the focus is on enjoying your craft instead of being crafted by the algorithm.
