AF 50mm F1.8 Neo from TT Artisan
TT Artisan have made an amazingly affordable lens for mirrorless full frame cameras that opens the door to experimenting with fast primes on a budget. This lens is available for Sony, Nikon and Leica mounts.

I spent a few weeks on the streets of Melbourne to test how good a lens you can get for under $100. TT Artisan have been releasing some great small primes in recent years, but nothing quite as "affordable" as this one. Priced at just US$89 they have paired back every possible cost of construction. There is no focus ring, no aperture ring and no buttons or switches. The only moving parts are the internal autofocus mechanism.

The image quality is seriously good, except very close focus. For street scenes, landscape or portrait range the lens performed beautifully. The AF was confident even when shooting straight back into the sun. Flare on the lens when the sun hits the front glass can be very distracting. Otherwise, this 50mm delivers lovely contrast and brightness and is sharp even when shooting wide open.

This is an excellent lens for anyone who wants to experiment with a fast prime, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. There are better 50mm lenses out there, but they cost a good deal more than this one.

The 50mm F1.8 Neo is available for Sony, Nikon and Leica mounts.

Good Gear

Very selected features on the hardware, software and extra wares that help me get the job done.

DxO PhotoLab Discount Code

I posted a video about getting away from subscription pricing with Adobe and Capture One, so the folks at DxO reached out to offer a discount code to my readers :)

Sony A7 IV Custom Setup

My guide to custom settings on the Sony A7IV, including a free download of my own CamSet to configure your Sony.

TT Artisan 35mm F1.8

Food photography lens for smaller mirrorless cameras. Excellent quality images and a fast aperture make this lens the ideal companion to your APS-C sized sensor such as the Nikon Z50 and Canon R50.

Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD

I travelled in the Himalayas for a few months with this lovely lens. If you're interested in more than just tech specs, and what it's like to work with this lens for an extended time then you've come to the right place.

Viltrox E-Z Autofocus Adapter

Sounded too good to be true, but this thing actually works. Tested with a handful of full-frame Sigma E-mount lenses on the Nikon ZR.

ZV-E1 Still My Favourite Sony

Two years on and this affordable and compact full-frame camera still delivers great results, and still makes us smile. Definitely one of those times when less is more.
