Arctic Norway Photography Tour

Every year Ewen and Shellie run some very special photo tours in the Arctic, for some very special companions. A mix of local knowledge, stunning winter scenery plus a little aurora magic. For eight lucky travellers this is an experience they will treasure for a lifetime. We do our best to make it the best. Ewen and Shellie have over a decade of experience with photography and tours in the Arctic, and each winter they make it their second home.

Behind the scenes we also have a local aurora specialist and outdoors expert, Guide Gunnar, to help us experience the best of the Arctic. And to make the experience complete, our private chef Shellie Froidevaux will be catering along the way so we can stay in remote and marvellous locations and focus fully on the photography. Nobody works as hard to give you a great experience while chasing auroras in the Arctic.

For over a decade we've been running tours deep into the Arctic. Here's why we love it...

What To Pack

Choosing your lenses for an Arctic Norway trip presents a few unique challenges. Let's look at what you want in your bag for this adventure.

Aurora Photography

Welcome to my super quick guide to shooting The Northern Lights in the Arctic. I’ve got lots of pretty pictures here plus some very useful advice to help you get started on a lifelong obsession with Auroras!

Norway Off The Dial

Here's a special video we made a few years back about our two week photography tour from Tromso to Lofoten.

STUNNING LANDSCAPES AND AURORAS IN REMOTE ARCTIC LOCATIONS

Day 1-3 | Tromsø
Our home for these three days are some lovely cabins to the west of Tromsø, right on the water. It’s a remarkably peaceful part of the coast and ideal for chasing auroras should we get clear conditions at night. Tromsø is a great airport to fly into with lots of connections to Oslo and some international cities as well.
We’ve picked out some exceptional locations to photograph around the islands of Kvaløya and Ringvassøya, plus we’ll traverse into the city of Tromsø and explore some of the fjords to the east of the hills. We want to ensure that everyone on the workshop has a chance to practise their night photography and adjust to shooting in the cold. We walk through the basic techniques for auroras, star trails and discuss how moonlight and twilight will affect your creative options.

Days 4-7 | Senja
We have a 4 hour drive to reach our next location, the remote coastline of Senja. Along the way we pass sweeping hills and quiet coastal communities, before hitting those dramatic plunging fjords that we love so much. The weather here can be equally dramatic, with sudden bursts of snow or breaking sunlight giving us different charms to photograph. We have also picked out some locations for Aurora photography on the nearby coastline. Senja is lesser known than Lofoten and a lot less crowded, but still has the dramatic peaks that plunge down into the fjords. It’s very special.

Days 8-9 | Grov
This little fishing village is out of the way but worth the diversion. Not only is there some magnificent scenery to be enjoyed from the water, but also some pristine frozen lakes that we can explore with the help of local experts. The local cooking is excellent here too :) This stop lets us enjoy some mountain auroras as well as on the coastline.

Day 10-13 | Lyngen
Of all the places we have travelled in the Arctic for aurora photography, Lyngen is our favourite. It’s a very quiet part of Norway and has not been over-run by photographers yet. It is peaceful and rich in steep mountains and open skies. We have some local friends in the region who will help us make the most of the scenery. We stay in the same cabins for the duration of our Lyngen visit for maximum comfort, and maximum opportunity to shoot auroras.

Days 14 | Departure
We leave the cabins at 9:00am to head to town and catch our flight from Tromsø. We have a ferry and some icy roads to cover on the way but nothing we haven’t done before.

Our Private Chef

The reason we can stay in such remarkable locations across Arctic Norway is because we run this tour with a private chef on board. Shellie Froidevaux is a food photographer and recipe developer from Melbourne, Australia. For nearly a decade has been mastering the art of cooking for groups in remote locations. She's so talented at cooking in cabins, she wrote a book on it called "Cabin Fever"!

Because we are totally self sufficient for meals, we can stay in some amazing places. Shellie gives us a hand-crafted taste of the local cuisine and local ingredients. Reindeer, skrei, char and cloudberries just to name a few. No other Arctric tour can match this experience.

Guide Gunnar

We first met Gunnar over a decade ago and he's been one of the reasons we love the Arctic so much. His enthusiasm for life in the north, for auroras and for getting outdoors to experience the wilderness is genuine and infectious. We love having Gunnar on the team to bring the best possible local flavour to the tour. Find out more about Gunnar and his passion for Tromso and the north on his website:

The World's Best Photo Tours
You won't find a better tour experience: Unmatched knowledge of the locations and local support, hand crafted experiences that run only once every one or two years, our experience teaching the art of photography and a commitment to smaller group sizes.

Beginners Welcome
These tours are not just for advanced photographers, we love welcoming beginners to the craft to help them fast track their creative abilities. Sharing what we know and giving other photographers a truly wonderful experience is the best part of running these tours. If you're ready to learn new skills while you travel then this is the trip for you. If you want to spend quality time with like minded people and enjoy the sharing of knowledge and experiences, then we would love to have you along.

8 is Great
If you have to share a tour with dozens of other photographers, then it's just a tour instead of a photo tour. Smaller groups mean less drama, more fun and are infinitely more rewarding. My first responsibility is to ensure every person on my tour gets plenty of my time and advice, and with fewer photographers in one place you will come home with better photos and the best light :)

Small isn't just good, it's great!
